If you ever forget your password or no longer have access to your Bitcoin Vault for other reasons, it can be restored via BitGo and the bitcoin on it can be sent to another wallet.
To recover your Bitcoin Vault follow these steps:
-
Get the Vault's main, backup and reference key. You wrote down the main and backup key as a backup copy on paper when you created the Vault. The reference key can be found in your account under Vault and then by clicking on the three dots in the top right corner or in the email you received while creating the Vault.
-
Download and install the latest version of the BitGo recovery application via this link
-
.dmg = Mac
-
.exe = Windows
-
.deb = Linux
-
-
Open the recovery application and select the ‘Non-BitGo Recoveries’ option
- Select ‘Non-BitGo Recoveries’ again in the next step
-
Select wallet type = Bitcoin
-
Select environment = Mainnet
-
Now you need your paper backup with the main and backup keys, each containing twelve words. Enter these here in all lower cases
- Copy and paste the new main key into the recovery program under Box A Value and the new backup key under Box B Value.
An error message under the boxes with the content “This field should be a JSON object. JSON objects begin with a {and end with a}" can be ignored
-
Now copy your reference key and paste it into Box C Value
-
In the field Destination Address, add a Bitcoin address to which your bitcoin should be sent. Only legacy Bitcoin addresses that start with a 1 and SegWit addresses that start with a 3 are currently supported
-
Leave Wallet Passphrase and API Key blank and leave the Address Scanning Factor at the default value of 20
-
Click the Recover Funds button - this may take some time, be patient
-
Once successful, download the JSON file
-
Open the JSON file, search for 'transactionHex' and copy it
For Windows, you can for example use Wordpad:
For Mac you can for example use Mozilla Firefox or TextEdit. Click the arrow to expand it
To optionally view further details of your transaction, insert the transactionHex here. You will now see the Bitcoin recipient address, network charges and other data.
- To autorise the transaction, paste the transactionHex here and click on BROADCAST TRANSACTION.
If the transaction was successful, the transaction ID will be provided and transaction becomes trackable
- Once you've received the bitcoin at your external wallet, you can contact Customer Support to delete your old Vault and will then be able to create a new Vault. To keep on using it, simply send the bitcoin back to your Vault and you're good to go!
